Calvin Magee | Theatre Maker | Artist in Residence 2025
1 June - 31 August
Calvin is a theatre director, youth theatre practitioner, and socially engaged artist from Dundalk. He is passionate about the role theatre can play in driving change within communities and individual lives. Calvin is currently the Community Liaison Officer at M.A.D Youth Theatre and the Youth Theatre Coordinator at Nenagh Arts Centre. He also works with Barnstorm Theatre Company, Run of the Mill Theatre Company, and Fighting Words. Calvin is a member of the Board of Directors of Youth Theatre Ireland. In 2023, he received a YPCE Arts Council Bursary to explore verbatim theatre. Most recently, Calvin directed Shout by Alexis Zegerman at An Táin Arts Centre, a play about neurodiversity and inclusion, featuring the venue’s first-ever relaxed performance. In April 2025, Calvin will direct M.A.D Youth Theatre’s production of Salt Mountain by Carmel Winters, a play about violence, displacement, and home, created in partnership with An Táin Arts Centre and funded by the Arts Council’s YPCE Project Award.
Calvin says of the residency, “I’m so excited to be the theatre-maker in residence at An Táin Arts Centre in 2025. Growing up in Dundalk, An Táin was where I first fell in love with theatre. It’s where I discovered how powerful and transformative storytelling can be, so it feels really special to return here in this role. These days, it feels harder and harder for people to have honest, open conversations about the challenges we’re facing as a society. I believe theatre has the unique ability to bring people together and create space for dialogue that’s meaningful and human. During my residency, I’ll be exploring Augusto Boal’s methods and looking at ways to bring his approach into a local context. I’m passionate about creating work that’s collaborative, thought-provoking, and deeply connected to the community, and I can’t wait to bring this approach to my residency.”
