With Karen Shields
In An Táin Arts Centre children are encouraged to learn new drama and theatre devising skills through a series of fun games and activities. Each workshop is designed to foster and support creativity and confidence, with class sizes affording each child the attention they deserve. Karen is a Dundalk-based facilitator.
About our facilitator
Karen, after having her first taste of theatre in her high school production as Lady Macbeth, trained in Dramatic Studies in Toronto’s George Brown College. She then went on to attend Toronto’s Improvisation School of Second City training centre which led to evenings performing in an improvisational group for audiences around Toronto. Following a three week run of performing JP Priestly’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ in Toronto’s oldest theatre (Scarborough Guild Theatre), Karen returned to Ireland and became a member of The Spiral Staircase theatre group where they experimented and showcased the works of Ted Hughes and TS Elliot in Dundalk’s then named An Táin Theatre.
She then began working along side Dundalk Theatre Workshop and Dolmen Theatre Group where she appeared in such plays as Inherit the wind; Les Liaisons Dangereuses; Lend me a Tenor and Plaza Suite. While working backstage for ‘Glen Gary Glen Ross’ in the Dublin’s Peacock Theatre, Karen was preparing for roles in Dublin’s ‘Bow Productions’ of Mna na h’Eireann; Esker Lane and then proceeded to travel the country with their production of The Vagina Monologues. Since 2014, Karen has been attending the Drama league of Ireland’s week long drama workshops in Limerick University with tutors such as Chrisie Poulter (Samual Beckett Theatre), Louise Lowe (The Lir Academy) and Brian Burroughs (The Lir Academy).
